Unusual Demont

Support Act Review

Following the release of his debut EP titled HUES., Unusual Demont supported Emotional Oranges on their Sad Fruit tour, you can read the review of that here. With his most popular song AMBER garnering over 16M streams, I really hope next time he's in London it's on his own account, as he's definitely more than qualified for a headline show. However, he was definitely the right pick for this tour. He connected well with the crowd because of the similar upbeat, funky Pop/R&B they both make.

"Can we dance real quick?" he asks before he opens with PINE. His smooth R&B vocal leads the way under green lights and light funky grooves. His stage presence is fabulous, a walk I've never seen before. The crowd loves it, waving their hands in the air like they just don't care, the carefree melody has them dancing like it's summer.

He transforms into slow R&B for Lonely/Me. His vocals buttery and golden, he pours his heart out for a minute. The beat drops as the crowd sway their arms in the air, pulsating cymbals over a pretty melody that really drifts off into space as Unusual Demont sits deep in his feelings.

He introduces PURPLE by asking the crowd if they like Prince, asking "Y'all know how he be jumping around and screaming and shit, he's like "AH!" I'mma do that so when that happens, if y'all could also jump around and scream so I don't look crazy." The stage turns from indigo to purple as he sings and moves to the music, playing the air drums when the beats hit. The smooth guitar and his slick voice in the first half contrast the second half where he applies more emotion in his voice, getting louder. He gets the crowd jumping up and down as he screams into the microphone. The juxtapositon in his performance really brings the feelings of the song together.

He prepares the crowd to help out with Maybe Not, and as the lights ricochet across the stage we join in. He begins the tune with getting the audience to sway their arms in the air. "Maybe you the one or," he sings "Maybe not!" we respond. This back and forth between him and the audience feels like a thrilling game of table tennis.

DAFFODIL he repeats the process, singing us the lyrics so we're prepared to join in. Green and orange lights shine on his performance as he sings us the sweet lullaby that is DAFFODIL, calming and evoking tranquility, until he shouts out to Grease, which I believe is a reference to Summer Lovin' per the some of the lyrics he's asked us to sing: "Summer's on the way".

He finishes with AMBER, the lighting reflecting the name of the song. He goes out with a bang, bouncing up and down the stage. Unusual Demont combines nearly everything he's done on stage in these past songs for the finale, jumping, shouting, crowd participation, swaying, vocals that move through his songs like easily spreading butter with a knife. It's all there. The audience loved him.

Unusual Demont's connection with the crowd was the best I'd ever seen, he just knew how to navigate and make sure they were having a good time. A response like this one can be rare at times when you're a support act, but he had the crowd dancing the entire time. Whoever booked him for the tour needs a raise, the reason he was able to connect so well is because his music is akin to that of the headliners. Music you'd put together in a playlist if you catch my drift. It's the mood and vibe that was needed to open up the concert for Emotional Oranges. He even performs like he's already a big star, and I know one day he will be. I have no doubt he'll sell out a London venue in no time.
